Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) Treatment

What are the symptoms of FIP

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) Treatment

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a disease of the immune system with a mortality rate of up to 95%. FIP is a mutation of coronavirus and is still terminally ill. Coronavirus
More than 80% of cats are born with this virus and will become FIP after mutation.
There are two forms of FIP: wet and dry.
Effusive: Abdominal effusion in the early stage and pleural effusion in the later stage, resulting in dyspnea. Onset to death: days to weeks.
Dry (non-effusive): no accumulation of water, general eye and nervous system problems. Harder to notice. Onset to death: weeks to months.

Cause of FIP

FIP is caused by virus mutation when the immune system is weakened, so there are all possible reasons for the decline of the cat’s immune system. The cat litter box is not clean enough, the environment is dirty and noisy. Special attention to multi-cat households! ! !

FIP Disease

Fever, not eating or drinking, weight loss and physical decline. If the cat does not eat or drink, parents must pay attention

FIP Infect

FIP is not contagious to people. Coronavirus can be contagious in the early stage of mutation, and there is a chance of infection by using a cat litter box. Usually, after FIP is diagnosed, all the cats in the family have coronavirus, and no mutation will have any effect on cats. So what needs to be done is to ensure that other cats are physically strong and immune. Quarantine is useless because the mutated Coronavirus is not contagious.

FIP treatment

Officially, FIP does not have medicine and doctors, and euthanasia is recommended when going to the hospital. At present, veterinarian Niels Pederson of UCDavis has successfully developed a treatment plan: GS441524, But it has not yet obtained FDA approval. Medicines can only be purchased privately and administered by cat parents themselves. It is not illegal for cat parents to buy and inject themselves! ! ! It’s kind of a gray area. Veterinarians will rarely help because of the possibility of having their license revoked.

FIP cat treatment

The following is a brief introduction to the treatment method
The research suggests 12 weeks and 84 days, but it can be slightly adjusted according to the situation of the cat.

  1. GS441 Injection
  2. Oral medicine (new)

I’ve used both of them and they work great.

Injection is the initial method, every 24 hours.
Benefits: It is suitable for cats who refuse to eat, and the injection can confirm the complete absorption of the medicine.
Disadvantages: cat parents need to learn to give injections (not difficult), and the skin of cats may be burned (the pH of the medicine is low, and the outflow is easy to burn the skin)

Oral medication

Newly developed medicines should be taken every 24 hours. Fast for an hour before and after eating.
Benefits: Suitable for parents who do not know how to get injections.
Cons: Cats with high doses are stressed (heavy weight) and take a lot of medicine. It is troublesome to spit out.
